Alcoholism

Problems stemming from alcohol addiction may vary in severity from mild to life threatening and affect the individual, the person's family, and society in numerous adverse ways.
Withdrawal, for those physically dependent on alcohol, is much more dangerous than withdrawal from heroin or other narcotic drugs.

Alcohol abuse refers to excessive or problematic use with one or more of the following:
  • Failure to fulfill major obligations at work, school, or home
  • Recurrent use in situations where it is hazardous (such as driving a car or operating machinery)
  • Legal problems
  • Continued use of alcohol despite having social, family, or interpersonal problems caused by or worsened by drinking
Alcohol dependence refers to a more serious disorder and involves excessive or maladaptive use leading to 3 or more of the following:
  • Tolerance changes (need for more to achieve desired effect, or achieving the effect with lesser amounts of alcohol)
  • Withdrawal symptoms following a reduction or cessation of drinking (such as sweating, rapid pulse, tremors, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, or seizures) or using alcohol to avoid withdrawal symptoms (for example, early morning drinking)
  • Drinking more alcohol or drinking over a longer period of time than intended (loss of control)
  • Inability to cut down or stop
  • Spending a great deal of time drinking or recovering from its effects
  • Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities
  • Continuing to drink despite knowing alcohol use has caused or worsened problems

Treatment

Treament begins first with a consultation during which we attempt to ascertain the patient’s motives for seeking help, the stage of dependency the patient is at and to what extent he/she is aware of the seriousness of the problem. After the initial consultation is complete the doctors then begin to formulate an individual treatment program based on the patient’s personal profile.

Detoxification begins and the body is cleansed not only of alcohol and its metabolites, but also of second grade poisons that form after long term alcohol use. After the initial detoxification process we enter the second stage, which consists of returning the patient’s cells to a level of functionality extant before the body fell prey to addiction. After the metabolism therapy is concluded the patient feels younger, fresher, stronger – and free from alcohol.

The desire for alcohol disappears. After bringing the patient to a point where the desire for alcohol has disappeared we then prepare the  patient’s immune system for the vaccination - a special anti-alcohol procedure, which makes it possible to create aversion, even hostility, to everything that is connected with alcohol, including, for example,  the smell and taste. After verifying the results and ascertaining that the patient is now negatively inclined towards alcohol he/she then proceeds forward through the rehabilitation program.

Patients pass no less than 12 months under observation in our clinic, at which time they take their daily dose of medicine and see to the reorganization of their life. Naturally, patients set on achieving sobriety are by this time already adapting well to life without alcohol, of which they are invariably proud.
